2009 Lake Shannon Rubbish Removal Guidelines

(HMS:  810-735-6741)

Lake Shannon Association is contracting with HMS removal as the single waste hauler.  The annual cost per homesite is included with the annual association dues.

The following are HMS guidelines for weekly trash removal which currently takes place on Mondays.  Yard waste details are at the bottom of this page.  See the separate website page for Recycling Guidelines.

HMS can be reached at 810-735-6741.

1.    MAKE SURE TRASH IS OUT BY 7 A.M.  If your trash is not out, we mark on the route the time we were by.  Our routes are constantly changing and sometimes it is necessary for us to run things differently so please make sure your trash is out by 7 a.m.  If it is out late, you will have to wait for your next scheduled pick up.

2.  NO HAZARDOUS WASTE MATERIAL – this includes, but is not limited to: paint thinner, oil based paints, polyurethane, oil, gasoline, kerosene, propane/propane tanks, asbestos, car batteries etc… PLEASE DO NOT PUT THESE ITEMS IN A BLACK GARBAGE BAG AND SET OUT FOR PICK UP!  IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO PUT THESE ITEMS IN THE LANDFILL AND WE WILL BE FINED HEAVILY PLUS HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY ROAD CLEAN UP DUE TO SPILLS!

3.    LATEX PAINT – we can take Latex paint cans but they have to be dry.  Remove lid and stir with kitty litter or sawdust if there is any paint in the can.  MIX WELL.  Leave next to garbage can with lid loosely on.

4.    CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS - We will take small amounts of construction debris on your normal pick up day, but it must be in your garbage can or in a bag.  Please keep weight limit to 50 pounds.  We will not pick up large piles of construction debris unless it is scheduled for a special pick up.  There will be a fee assessed ($25. per yard – the back of a pick up truck is equal to 2 yards).

5.    CARPET & MATTRESSES – Cut carpet in 4’ x 2’ rolls and bundle. There will be an additional charge for carpeting unless it is a small amount.  Price is based on amount of carpeting to be picked up.  Put carpet & mattresses out on regular trash day, but CALL & SCHEDULE PICK UP OR IT WILL NOT BE PICKED UP!!

6.    BOXES - break down all large and extra large boxes.  If you have an extremely large box, cut it down to a manageable size.  DO NOT fill large boxes with trash.

7.   WEIGHT LIMIT  - please keep weight limit of cans to 50 pounds.  The weight limit on curb carts (big garbage can on wheels) is 250 pounds.

8.    LARGE ITEMS - we allow one large item free per month – please call (810-735-6741) to schedule pick up.  Put large items out on your regular trash day (Monday).

9.    ITEMS WITH FUEL – please drain any oil/fuel from any item that you are putting out to be picked up.  This will help prevent fires from happening inside the garbage truck.

10.  REFRIGERATORS – the Freon must be removed from refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners before we can pick them up.  You must contact a heating and cooling company and, for a fee, they will come and remove the Freon and put a tag on your item.  Please call and schedule for large item pick up.

11.  YARD WASTE – yard waste is picked up weekly from April to November.  Please read the yard waste guidelines.

12.  HOLIDAYS – we will delay trash one day for only the following holidays:  New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  If the holiday falls on a weekend, we will not delay trash.  However, the Landfill may close and it may become necessary for us to delay trash.

13.  BAD WEATHER/TRUCK PROBLEMS – sometimes it is necessary to delay trash pick up due to inclement weather and/or major truck problems.  PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE FOR UPDATES BEFORE PULLING YOUR TRASH OR RECYCLING IN.

1.     Yard waste consists of leaves, grass clippings, weeds, small branches and twigs.

2.    All yard waste must be in brown paper leaf bags that can be purchased at your local store.  NO PLASTIC BAGS OR CANS PLEASE!!!  We will not pick up yard waste in plastic bags or cans.

3.    DO NOT PUT TRASH IN WITH YOUR YARD WASTE!   This includes the plastic flower packs/pots.

4.    PLEASE MAKE SURE BAGS ARE NO HEAVIER THAN 45 POUNDS!  Remember – a person needs to lift these bags at least waist high so please keep this in mind when packing your bags.

5.    If you have larger branches, please cut them down to a smaller size, bundle and tie them and put them at the curb.  We do not pick up logs, very large branches, bushes or trees (call for rate and special pick up for these items)

6.    PICK UP IS WEEKLY.  Pick up day for all yard waste is on every MONDAY.  If pick up day falls on a holiday, pick up will be delayed one day.  There are only 4 holidays during the yard waste season that we would delay for: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

7.    Yard waste season runs from April through November 30th.

8.    Please have yard waste out to the curb by 7 a.m.
